Here is an excerpt from the award-winning story, "Guinea":

By the time Ursel Greer found unconditional devotion in the eyes of another being, she was 87 years old.  It began one brittle January morning after a pipe-bursting cold snap.  Between the cold and the lights flickering out on the old Hickman place, she anticipated a weary morning.  Ursel threw on her work coat over an old sweater and stepped out on the porch to find Guinea.

And for something a bit different, this comes from "Nine is Her Number":

My father named me Tisa, ninth, for eight daughters preceded me from his loins.  The others he named Jamelia, beautiful; Dhakiya, wise; Habibah, beloved.  I am the only number, the last child of a busy merchant with more daughters than names.  My mother Amne says I am quarrelsome because I reject my place.  She is a fourth wife, and well she has learned the art of appeasement.   Our understanding of tisa differs.  What she sees as last, I see as absolute.  It allows no room for compromise.

Both of these stories are available in the anthology Triangulation: Taking Flight, published in July 2008 by PARSEC, Inc. and available on Amazon.com.
